Ski Companies Go Green Against Climate Change

01, April 2015: Global warming has been steadily decreasing the amount of snowfall seen in popular skiing destinations, a fact that has been reported to have lost the industry a billion dollars over the last ten years.

As a result many popular skiing companies are making an effort to reduce their carbon footprint and find more environmentally friendly methods of creating their own energy, such as the use of renewable wind electricity. Companies are also focusing on making their holiday accommodation greener, starting with popular catered ski chalet and apartment options.

Renowned skiing company Ski Amis are working towards making holidays to their French Alps resorts greener, with a view to a sustainable future in winter tourism. A spokesperson commented, “We are proud to be part of an industry that is making such big steps towards a greener future. Our catered ski chalet accommodation is growing in popularity so we take every opportunity to reduce our carbon footprint.”

Other ecologically friendly initiatives have included energy-efficient snowmakers, biofuel snow cats and the use of LED lighting in accommodation such as hotels and catered ski chalets. Some resorts have been working tirelessly for several years and have managed to reduce their carbon footprint by 60%, paving the way as a positive example and an inspiration for companies like Ski Amis.

The warming effect of climate change is said to be reversible with enough reduction in fossil fuel consumption. Without these changes, temperatures are estimated to increase between four to 10 degrees Fahrenheit by the end of the century. This would cause a further decline of snowfall from a minimum of 25% if the increase stays at 4 degrees and a 100% in the case of a 10-degree rise.

Sustainability programs are beginning to become commonplace, as the skiing industry plays such a vital part in the economy for hosting countries. Non-profit sustainability organisation Ceres have already implemented a BICEP (Business for Innovative Climate and Energy Policy) coalition, which several ski companies have joined. They are working towards these sustainability programs becoming a global goal.
