21, November 2014:
Sicily has long been a favourite destination for holidaymakers who want
to enjoy one of the most beautiful places in Italy. The island is home
to many interesting attractions, ranging from historic monuments to
picture-perfect beaches.
Now anyone planning to book a stay in one of the stunning villas in Sicily can enjoy even greater choice when it comes to planning their travel arrangements, with EasyJet's announcement of a new route to the island from Bristol Airport.
People in the southwest of the UK will soon be able to fly from Bristol Airport direct to Catania, in Sicily. Flights to the new route will begin in May 2015, and they are already on sale.
EasyJet will be running the new route through the summer months, making it a popular option for holidaymakers booking villas in Sicily. It is also likely to be an affordable option due to EasyJet's focus on low fares.
So, apart from being a gateway to the rest of the island, just what is there for tourists in Catania? The city is located in the east of Sicily, and its international airport makes it a convenient destination for anyone who wants to stay in the nearby region. However, the city itself has much to offer holidaymakers.
Founded in the 8th century BC, its historic roots ensure there are many attractions to see here. In the winter it is the setting of the Festa di Sant'Agata, one of the best festivals in Italy, where as many as a million people line the streets to watch the parades.
At any other time of year, visitors can explore the Baroque city centre and see highlights including Piazza Duomo, Catania Cathedral, Castello Ursino, Museo Belliniano and the Monastero di San Nicolò l'Arena.
One of the most popular activities here, though, is a visit to Mount Etna. As the largest active volcano in Europe, it is a big attraction for anyone staying in villas in Sicily, and it is located very close to Catania. Visitors can head up on the cable car and then walk to the crater.
A holiday in one of the lovely villas in Sicily is now even more within the ordinary person's grasp with EasyJet's new route.
