Is Depression A Hereditary Characteristic?

24, July 2015: It has recently been reported in the UK Independent that according to scientists who have published their findings in the journal 'Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences,' children could inherit over-active brain circuits, responsible for linking 3 parts of the brain, which could make them more prone to stress and anxiety and depressive disorders. The research study is based upon experiments performed on almost 600 young rhesus monkeys, which concludes that around 35 % of variation in anxiety-like tendencies could be explained by family history.

During the research carried out, researchers made use of brain imaging to measure habits related to stress and anxiety, and with the data supplied were able to identify the brain systems responsible for transferring stress and anxiety from parent to child. Researchers were able to verify that 3 areas of the brain located in the brain stem; the amygdala, the limbic brain fear center, and the prefrontal cortex, remained in fact linked to hereditary mental illness.

Chair of psychiatry at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, Ned Kalin, said during the press meeting: "Over-activity of the 3 brain areas in question, are inherited brain modifications, and directly linked to developing anxiety and anxiety as we age. We actually think that to a certain extent, stress and anxiety might provide an evolutionary benefit, as it helps an individual to recognize and prevent danger, but problems develop when the circuits become over-active, resulting in anxiety and depressive disorders."

But not everyone would appear to agree with these findings. In a post seen on the "A Bug Free Mind" website, author Andy Shaw is quoted as saying that anxiety is just an option. He includes: "A couple of apparent bits initially, I [mean a mindful individual would not choose to be depressed as that would be bad for their well being. So clearly their actions are not the actions of a sane aware person, as anxiety makes individuals briefly insane at best."

According to Andy, anxiety is simply an option. He adds: "There may be some chemical modifications going on inside the body too, but they have the tendency to be brought about because of the thoughts in your mind, producing the worst situation, and not because they existed before the ideas. So at the end of the day, anxiety is a choice and you can choose how you feel about things. You can decide to feel happy or sad. Yes! Joy is an option too, and so is unhappiness."

Andy concludes his expert opinion by welcoming individuals to go deeper and learn more about eliminating other self inflicted ailments like fear, tension, anxiety, and worry too. He adds: "I take those problems apart as well as going deeper into handling anxiety in "Creating A Bug Free Mind." In the first 5 chapters of my book, I share some strategies which provide the power to silence the mind and reclaim control, freely readily available at abugfreemind.com."
