27, June 2015:
A new survey conducted by concerned travel experts has revealed that up
to one third of tourists embarking on a winter sports holiday choose to
do so without the benefits of travel insurance. Many insurance
companies, including renowned online provider Insuremore,
have expressed their concerns that so many travellers mistakenly
believe they can rely solely on an EHIC card to cover any potential
problems.
An EHIC is Not Enough
In reality, say experts, there have been many accounts where providing a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) after an accident has only covered basic medical essentials. The survey showed that France and Austria are proving to be the two most popular destinations for snow sport trips in 2015; this is creating concern among travel insurance companies as, with both these destinations in Europe, tourists are (according to the survey) less likely to opt for insurance when the option of an EHIC card is available.
A spokesperson from travel insurance company Insuremore commented, “It appears some travellers are either completely opting out of insurance or just taking out policies that only cover them on-piste. It’s concerning, as winter tourists can face a number of issues, both on and off the slopes.”
The survey revealed that one in four holidaymakers intended to purchase general insurance cover, and that many were unaware of what their policies actually covered them for. Research by snow sports experts has shown that damaged knees are the most reoccurring injury among winter sport enthusiasts, with many having previously suffered from similar injuries. Companies like Insuremore advise that skiers or snowboarders with past injuries should be opting for comprehensive insurance, as they have a heightened risk of injuring themselves again and being left with hefty medical bills. Other common injuries include dislocated shoulders, facial injuries and broken legs, but experts advise that all these potential problems can be covered by the right insurance policy.
If you're travelling abroad for a winter sports holiday, well-known online insurer Insuremore offers easy to understand policies designed especially for the abovementioned eventualities.
