France Considers Ski-Friendly School Holiday Dates

11, June 2015: The French government has recently stirred up controversy by expressing interest in changing children’s school holidays in order to give the ski industry a boost. It is believed French families have been turning down last minute ski deals in time for the Easter holidays as some believe the best snow of the season has already fallen.

A Boost in Revenue?

Spring holidays currently begin in early, mid and late April, depending on which region the school is in, and the ski industry has expressed concerns that these dates are considered too late to catch the last of the good snow. In order to boost the revenue of the winter sports industry, the French government is contemplating moving holidays to an earlier date, as resort operators argue they stand to gain up to 3% more in earnings if holidays are moved to a week earlier.

However ski experts argue that snow has been known to fall late into the Easter break, giving families who have booked last minute ski deals access to quiet slopes that have ideal weather conditions. A spokesperson from renowned ski holiday company Ski Amis added, “Many experienced skiers actually prefer later season breaks as it is a wonderful contrast of sunshine and snow, which gives holidaymakers the best of both worlds.”

Despite the early holiday proposal being backed by foreign minister Laurent Fabius, some parents’ associations and teachers’ unions have expressed their objections to the proposal, claiming that it would make minimal difference to the industry. Many believe that changing school holidays would do nothing but cause inconvenience for parents.

However ski resort owners argue that the school calendar was previously changed in 2009, which is what has caused the current 3% loss in revenue, meaning a second change in holidays would be largely beneficial.

Until matters are decided upon, experts in the ski industry are encouraging families to give last minute ski deals a chance in order to prove that excellent snow conditions continue on until late April.
