Approximately 45,750 people in the US will be diagnosed with some form
of oral cancer this year and only just over half will still be alive in

Traditionally screening for oral cancer is done visually, by carefully examining the oral tissues for any abnormalities and by feeling these tissues for any changes to texture. While this screening for suspicious lesions is good, it has been shown that some premalignant lesions or changes to the cells cannot be detected using these methods.
The Sapphire Plus Lesion Detection system uses proven technology to screen far more effectively for any small changes that could otherwise go unnoticed. The system works by shining a special blue light onto the oral tissues, exciting certain types of cells present in the mouth. Normal cells will fluoresce, but abnormal tissues including pre-cancerous and cancerous cells will appear quite differently as the fluorescence is interrupted, making it far easier to see any changes.
Patients are also advised to be aware of any changes that may occur to their oral tissues in between regular screenings. Signs to look out for include changes to the color of oral tissues, any changes to its texture and sore spots or ulcers that fail to heal after two or three weeks. The prognosis for oral cancer is significantly improved with early detection.
